Kohala Hospital Joins SC Scrubs Drive
Kealakekua, island of Hawaii – Early in October, Kohala Hospital nurses and other hospital personnel joined a county-wide effort to collect scrubs for clinical workers in flood-soaked South Carolina.
Interim CNE, Carmela Rice was one of many Hawaii Island nurses to receive an urgent text from a South Carolina (SC) emergency room nurse seeking donations of new or used scrubs for her fellow SC nurses affected by the devastating flooding in that state.

Richard McDowell, M.D. – New Medical Director Kona Community Hospital and Kohala Hospital
Richard McDowell, MD, FACEP has accepted the position of Medical Director for the Hawaii Health Systems Corporation (HHSC) West Hawaii Region which includes Kona Community Hospital and Kohala Hospital. He is scheduled to begin his new duties on December 1, 2014.
Dr. McDowell has over 30 years of experience in emergency medicine. He is currently the Director of Emergency Medicine at Kona Community Hospital; a position he has held since July 2001. He is also the hospital’s Trauma Medical Director.

Kohala Hospital Charitable Foundation Golf Tournament
On Saturday, February 15th, 2014, the 6th Annual Kohala Hospital Charitable Foundation Golf Tournament will take place at the Hapuna Golf Course. Golfers from near and far come to support this very popular tournament. It offers many generous prizes and tons of fun, and each golfer receives a gift bag.
The tournament is again sponsored by the Meinardus Family and the Bitburger Brewery. 100% of all the money taken in will go directly to the Kohala Hospital Emergency Room Building Fund. The day of fun includes Bitburger and Koestritzer beers and a fabulous buffet lunch at Arnie’s. The event is catered by the Hapuna Hotel. Last year the KHCF raised $ 36,000.

Kohala Hospital ER Renovation Project Set to Begin
After years of discussion, planning, and fund-raising, Kohala Hospital is set to begin demolition on its Emergency Room. The ER renovation/relocation project kicked off on July 1, 2013. A commemorative “wall-breaking” ceremony on June 20th included a blessing, a presentation on building plans and work phases, and light refreshments. The community was invited to join the festive occasion and to view the long awaited results of their investment, time, and patience.
Renovations Create a Modernized Care Environment
Kohala Hospital is in the midst of ongoing major renovations to our facility. Not only is the hospital looking better, but the renovations and upgrades enable us to deliver improved and more efficient healthcare to our patients, residents and community.
